Deep / shallow metal when choosing embark location
« on: February 24, 2011, 06:50:06 am »

I am a bit confused about the metal overview when choosing an embark location in version 0.31.19.

I choose a spot with shallow metal, because I thought it meant that the metal would be close to the surface rather than deep down in the earth.

But the only metal I have found so far is Galena (and not a lot of it)

So my question(s) is: How do I find a location with iron veins in sedimentary layers? (Yes I want steel and loads of it :P )
Put in another way, how do I find Hematite, Magnetite and/or Limonite

-Does deep/shallow imply something else than the deepth it is found in?
-Does it got something to do with the color the text is written with?
-Or something else??

afaik iron has been outright removed from the game. played 4 fortresses in 3 different worlds, and no civilization has ever had access to iron. neither have i. if you are lucky you will find tin/copper if you have deep/shallow metal. if you are lucky. not to complain, metals were far too common before.

1. In v31.19, Toady reworked world generation for the caravan arc, and metals are extremely scarce. This is likely to be fixed in 31.20.- Wiki Quote

Yeah... I guess you will have to go for the Blue stuff.. if you know what i mean

If iron still appears in the same places but at a lower rate, then all you have to do is find a biome with shallow flux and shallow metal. You might not get iron-bearing ores every time, but it should help.

As stated in other threads, deep metal(s) and shallow metal(s) just tells you that A ) there is a metal or metals type(s) B ) at a given depth setting (shallow or deep). There is no known way of guaranteeing the existence of iron ores without raw editting.

I agree, there were A LOT of iron before... And was pretty easy.

Its ok that iron is more rare now, more challenging :D

Gotta change the way I play now, I almost never traded before.

And yes gotta go for the blue stuff ;P

You could remove the aquifer tag from everything and add it to the iron-bearing ores. Then any embark with an aquifer will contain iron.

I had a region dripping in iron, but I had crap for fuel, and didn't know how easy it was to get to the magma early.

Iron is definitely there. My current embark has both magnetite and native platinum 4 z-levels below the surface, embedded in a layer of flux. No fuel, but I buy up all the logs I can, so it's no big deal.

^Same here, but with trees. Magnetite and platinum everywhere in a layer of dolomite. And there's a nice grassland outside.

Now iron deserves that 10 material value. It was a bit overpriced before.

I've got trees, but I slew them all in the first season getting steel going. So, I'm waiting for a massive regrow before I do another clear cut.
