um how do I get said color?

"Rough color" is indeed the code for uncut gems, which you can only obtain through mining. In rare cases the moody dwarf will want a very particular kind of uncut gem -- I once had a dwarf who wouldn't accept any of my unforbidden indigo tourmalines; he only scurried off to fill the order when I unforbid a citrine, which was in his likes list.

Which would explain why one of my clothmakers didn't accept any thread I had.

Sometimes "thread" means cloth, silk, or, presumably, wool specifically.

Then i guess it was silk I needed.. since I had the others.. or I simply didnt have enough?
