Animal management
« on: February 23, 2011, 07:35:54 pm »

I have decided to have a go at... essentially dwarves doing farming. A good few pairs of animals and a good grazing type map, even with running water.

Now because I am paranoid cautious I want to place all the animals in a restricted area so that it can only be reached by those who are allowed to touch them - its not a petting zoo for goblins to use. So I have put in channels and they are filled with water and I have a bridge (which is all good stuff).... but.....

How do I actually get the animals to move into this restricted area? Assuming there is a path from where they are to where I want them to go.

Chain them there and then release them.

More dwarvish: flood your fortress with water (extra points if you use magma instead) to force them there.

More dwarvish option is unfortunately not usable - they are on the surface.

How does one chain them? You create a chain at a point on the ground, then tell some unlucky dwarf they get to move the aminal there?

Everything is possible.

Yes, just assign an animal to the chain.

To get better control of the breeding and stuff like that, you could also leave them on the chains. I still need to get to that point.

There's the new feature of pastures. Press i then make a zone and designate it as Pen/Pasture. Animals assigned will stay there and graze on the grass there. However, to butcher an animal you need to unasign it first.

Yeah, pastures make containment into a cakewalk.  Just make a pasture and assign them, done.  No more elaborate rope systems and pet-forbidden doors...

And don't assume that the moat will stop the goblins from turning your livestock into pincusions. :P

I am a strong believer in the phrase "good fences make good neighbours" - hence the process of creating a giant fortification-based wall on the inside of the moat. And a retractable bridge will be the sole gap.
