Burrow-like Pastures
« on: April 02, 2011, 07:32:46 pm »

I'd like to allow my animals to graze in the area between by inner castle and outer walls, but cannot do this because zone size is quite limited. The zone system is alright for setting an area to take water from or such, but for limiting where a creature should roam it is lacking.

The burrow system was designed for containing creatures with their ability to be any size/shape and span multiple z levels if needed. I suggest that burrows, or something that operates like burrows, are used instead. Currently the only alternative to a small area of confinement is to have them starve in my meeting area. They should be able to roam a large and/or hilly area if I want them to.

I agree with this. ( I do, however, like the ability to do "floor flow" style designations for pastures under the current zone-based system)

Supported, I would like to designate a super large pasture without having to make four zones.

Very large pastures right now don't actually work terribly well, though.  Animals basically seem to pick a smaller area inside of a large pasture, and stick to that area, rather than spread out within the pasture.  This was a problem of people who wanted to designate large areas of pasture and stuff large numbers of animals into them - the animals would muddle together and get into fights with one another, even though they had the ability to expand outward.

This is not to say this is a bad suggestion, of course, just that Toady has some other work to do in setting it up.

There's no reason why one shouldn't be able to assign animals to burrows, actually, which would have the added benefit of not leaving the livestock outside to be slaughtered by goblins or megabeasts.

I think Toady's confusing interface better simulates the experience of a bunch of disorganised drunken dwarves running a fort.

Livestock do not recognize pastures until a dwarf leads them to it, however... that can mean all your dwarves run outside during an attack to take their sheep back in with them.  Just something to be aware of...

We obviously need herding dogs to do that effectively.

this is related to the idea - but takes it a bit differently...
right now grazers are basically herbivores - but a lot of the animals (like pigs) that are grazers arent really just grazers...
i'd suggest allowing pigs to eat rotten food and vermin - so essentially allow some animals to graze in a refuse pile - anyone who's familiar with pigs knows they can pretty much live on trash to begin with...
