OMG SLOW
« on: August 26, 2006, 04:53:00 am »

DF was running quite nicely for me under Win98, but I did a fresh XP install and things changed a lot. The intro lags with a speed of 1 frame per second and the main menu lags too. I wasn't brave enough to start a game, cause that'll probably take forever. I don't have such performance hits with any other applications: I can run GTA:SA fine, for example. Anyone has any ideas what's happening?

Additional notes:

These things don't matter (it's still slow as hell):

*fullscreen/windowed
*different fonts
*KEY_HOLD_MS
*presense/absense of sound files
*old DF install/clean DF install

I've yet to find any other app that lags as hard on my computer (tried other supposedly OpenGL games - they run perfectly).

It runs like that for me when i attempt to start it up when another program's running, that's hogging a great deal of the available memory.

Edit: Never try to make sense not long after waking up.

It appears that default XP drivers for some videocards don't support OpenGL very well. I downloaded drivers from Nvidia and the speed increased.

There is another strange thing I noticed - When I choose Quit from the main menu, process dwarfort.exe doesn't actually finish, and it also prevents another instances of DF appearing. It also blocks some other games. This reminds me again that I hate XP.

The real problem is obviously that Dwarf Fortress refuses to work on any computer where any Grand Theft Auto game is installed.  Dwarf Fortress is very particular about the company it keeps.

(Just joking, dude.)

The drivers make a huge difference.  The newest 2 from Nvidia work for me, although obviously only if you have an Nvidia card.

Would be nice if whatever was changed could be reverted back to it's previous settings cause right now the game is unplayable for me.

What video card are you using?   And what are your drivers?
