Stupid mysterious Xbox360 problem

I'm really hoping someone can think of something here...

Alright, first my silly convoluted setup:

For both my PS3 and 360, I get both my audio and video through my ASUS 1080p monitor with built-in speakers. It's great, except that one of this monitor's "features" is that whenever more than a second of silence occurs, the speakers shut off or something, so that when the audio resumes it fades in over the course of around 3 seconds. This is fine for movies, where there's always some sound going on, but for certain games it means losing ~50% of the voice acting in cutscenes without music. This only happens when the sound comes from HDMI.

To get around this, I have the HDMI cable plugged into the console running to a DVI adapter in the DVI slot on the monitor, making it video-only. Then, I run the audio to it seperately through the white and red thingies to the audio-in port. I've used this setup successfully for a long time for both the PS3 and 360, with the only difference being that the 360 requires one of these audio adapters for the audio.

Here's the problem:
One day, out of the blue, this setup stopped working for the 360 (but not PS3). After fiddling around, it seems that as long as the audio adapter is plugged in to the Xbox360, the video signal to the monitor is completely cut off. It may be messing with the Xbox itself, too, because unplugging the audio adapter makes the console restart and display the logo.
I've tested the AV cable, which uses the same slot as the audio adapter, and it works fine, so I doubt it's the slot. The audio adapter itself being broken seemed most likely, but I bought a replacement and it does the same thing! Messing around with the settings on the Xbox didn't accomplish anything either. I'm at the end of my rope!!

if you have hdmi then you shouldn't need a audio adapter for your systems
