I found trading was enough to get a few weapons - I also always request as many bars as possible from the caravan.

Of course I did have silver... enough to make silver warhammers and get a squad going.  The first year or two was the most dodgy, but after a couple caravans I had enough to make a few weapon traps. 

Also, cage traps with wooden cages.   Lots of cage traps.  I caught 6 gobbos with them in my first siege.  Also war dogs.  And Ballistae.
