Assigning multiple groundhogs to a single cage = release
« on: March 22, 2007, 09:03:00 am »

I keep having trouble with groundhogs sneaking into the cage traps at my fortress entrance, so I've been trying to find ways to get them out of my cages so I can reuse them.  Linking them to levers takes too long, but I thought I might be able to stuff a bunch of them into a single cage and release them all at once.  If I assign multiple groundhogs to a cage, however, the groundhogs are instead simply let out of their stockpile cages.  Shouldn't the dwarves bring the cages with them, like they do if you set a groundhog-occupied cage to empty?  I'm aware that I could just tame them and butcher them that way, instead of trying to use them for blood sport.

I'm not sure if this is a bug.

In my dealings with cages (I like to assign stray animals to cages before slaughter, so the butcher has less hassles rounding up the animals), well, in my dealings with cages I had the impression that each time you open a cage, there's a certain risk that one of the animals inside will escape.

If this is a bug, it strikes rather eratically; I took it to be that way by design. In theory, you can cram any number of animals into a single cage. With the chance of escape, you need to be a bit more careful.

You managed to post your problems in 2 threads, not giving the full story in either...

The groundhogs that are being released are most likely the ones being born. Wild animals can, and do, get pregnant and have offspring.

If the mother is in a cage, the offspring will be in the cage too. They will NOT however be assigned to that cage. Which means dwarves will release them when they get the chance.

Dwarves are easily frightened.  When a dwarf attempts to relocate a wild animal whether it's a groundhog or an elephant, he will get scared and let go of the animal unless the cage the animal is being relocated to is right next to the cage the animal is coming out of.

Contrary to what others have said, I don't see a problem in the way you described it. I have the exact same problems when I try to reassign wild animals.

I've never been able to put multiple wild animals in 1 cage. They always either release them in the animal stockpile when they try to cage them or just don't do the job at all. Even when I put the stockpile right beside the cage, they are released.

I tried to cage all my goblins together in 1 cage, but ended up just putting them in rows of cages and attaching the lever to all of them.
