Sorting/filtering when building
« on: February 21, 2011, 12:02:39 am »

It would be nice to have more sorting options than the default "sort by nearest item" that we have now when building things.

In particular, I'd like a "sort by value" (just like we have at the trade depot), that would be useful for furnishing noble's quarters.

And then I'd like a "sort by material type", which would put the most recently used material type at the top, then would list everything else alphabetically (useful when designating a complex set of walls or something that are all supposed to be obsidian without having to locate obsidian in fifty different places on the list of the other 900 stone types)

Finally, I'd like a "sort by color" so that if we just want a same-color wall, we don't have to remember if alunite or mica or slate is the same color as gabbro.  That one might be a bit special, listing the colors instead of materials.

And lastly, if you're really ambitious, add two filters:  magma safe & stone/blocks.  That way, we can build only with blocks (or only with loose stones), and we could turn off all the non-magma-safe stuff.

Megaconstructions everywhere will thank you.  Now, if you'll excuse me, I should get back to weaponizing the sky.  It's very important to write out one final message on the plate that crushes the entire surface of the world, you see.

You could have berries on the rocks and the dwarves would say it was "berry gneiss."
You should die horribly for this. And I mean that in the nicest possible way.

I've seen a bunch of these sorts of threads before.

Another popular one to add to your list: "Use last used material"

That way, if you want to make a wall for your entire fort out of solid marble, you can just keep mashing the "use last used material" button instead of finding marble on the list every time.

Personally, I like [DF] because after climbing the damned learning cliff, I'm too elitist to consider not liking it.
