No iron at embark?
« on: February 18, 2011, 12:43:32 pm »

With the new version release, i found that dwarves can't access iron on embark.

For instance, on my last embark, my dwarven civilization have access only to copper. No iron or steel --> no anvils --> no metal production!.
And if dwarves, the kings of mining, don't have acces to steel, i don't think humans can bring me some anvils.

In an other world, dorfs with steel, copper, but still no iron (how the hell did the made the steel? i don't have a mod that add a steel ore :P)

Another world... my dwarves have Pig Iron, but both steel and iron are absent. Only them.

Is this a new secret feature? A bug? Or i'm extreme unlucky?? I am the only one or there is somebody other than me in the same situation?

Guys, i like 0.31.19 fewer metals, but I need an anvil, and I don't want to spend 300 embark points for a steel one.

Basically, dwarves only have access to iron if there is iron near their civ and since metals are so much rarer that often doesn't happen. Your only real options are to go through all the dwarven civs to try to find one with iron/copper or just eat the 300 points for a steel one.  :-\

The answer is: how can dwarves have steel if they don't have iron and Iron-->Pig Iron-->Steel?

That's weird...

Apparently, for whatever reason the embark doesn't check to see if the civ has the components of an alloy, they just look to see if it can make the alloy. So dwarves will have steel with iron, bronze without tin, electrum without gold etc. No, it doesn't make sense, but I daresay it will be changed sooner or later.
