No-Vegitation Cavern?

I dug down to a cavern layer, but I can't tell which one it is because there is no vegetation there. Just lots of mud and giant (and small) cave spider webs. And the walls are made pretty-much out of solid gabbro (few gems and no veins), because apparently all the metal in my embark is shallow. A strangely empty cavern layer...

Just wait a bit and things should start growing. If not, cleanse it with magma.

Chances are, there's no water on the level so nothing is growing.  The third cavern layer will have blood thorns but nothing else if it's dry.

You get used to it, I don't even see the ASCII.  All I see is blacksmith, miner, goblin.

There is no (visible) water in the layer, but the floor IS covered with mud.

Water also needs to be present, even if it is muddied. That's why I always up the miniuim water setting for the caverns in world generation.

I'm still afraid to explore caverns, ever since the cave croc I came across. My poor dwarves. Took out fifteen of mine, I believe.
