Ramps

Ramps.

I'm having problems with ramps.  I often can't place them, and when I do my dwarfs do not use them.
When using 'd'->'r' I cannot place a ramp.  When using 'b'->'C'->'r' I can place a ramp, building it with stone.

Specifically, I dug a surface pit, using 'd'->'h' to designate a channel zone (if there's a better way to do this please educate me) and my two miners ran over and cleared it out.  Then they stay there, showing up on the same level as the surface but not moving.  If I bump the view down one level I can see the open space and can connect to it by digging a tunnel, but my original mining dwarfs do not show up here.  I can place a ramp on the surface level (where I can see the original mining dwarfs) but I cannot place a ramp on the level below (where I can tunnel to with other dwarfs).  I've dug similar two level holes below the surface using only mining with similar difficulties placing ramps (dwarfs can't leave the hole and die).  When moving around the 'x' after selecting that I want to build a ramp the only places that light up (turn green, instead of red) are as noted above (I have tried building elsewhere and cannot).  I'm not sure if it's me being stupid or a game error, either is acceptable at this point.

I may not be using the most up to date version of the game.  I'm at work currently and forgot to check at home before I left.  Yes, I've read the wiki.  No, the explanation did not help (it makes sense but alters nothing I've entered above).

Any assistance that could be rendered would be appreciated.

Didn't read your post in detail.

Are you aware that you have to have a solid wall to climb up next to the ramp on the lower level and a walkable floor above the solid wall?

d-h will create a ramp if the tile directly below is filled with stone or soil. If that tile that becomes the channel is marked for digging before it's channeled out, the ramp is automatically selected for removal, making it just a hole.

Ramps only work if you have a NSEW adjacent wall or some sort, and the tile above that wall is empty.

d-r is for channeling up, they dig out a square leaving a ramp, and break through the floor above the designated square.
