It isn't Planepacked ...
« on: February 17, 2011, 04:18:15 am »

... but it's close!

I just had to share the latest artifact my dwarves just created.  I thought at first I was going to lose a bunch of materials to a crappy bone artifact, but it turned out the bones in the craftshop were from the guy making bone bolts before he was rudely ejected from his work by my moody dwarf.  The end result?

Value: 18,000 Urists!  What a pleasant surprise.

Now, I wonder what would happen if I managed to turn that into !!Rurteskom Langgud Garem!!   ::) :o :D

This isn't that impressive, to be honest.  I've gotten more impressive goblets that are somehow adorned with 14 different images of the creator enjoying cheese.

Regardless, artifacts do not suffer damage, and therefore, when set alight, will burn indefinitely.  This can cause much humor when you leave the thing outside and forbidden, and watch as all sorts of kobolds and macaque burn themselves trying to steal it.

Planepacked filled up several pages, didn't it?  That thing is barely a paragraph.  You have an odd definition of "close."

I agree with the idea to light it on fire and leave it as thief bait, though.  :D

They're nearly as bad as badgers. Build a couple of anti-buzzard SAM sites marksdwarf towers and your fortress will look like Baghdad in 2003 from all the aerial bolt spam. You waste a lot of ammo and everything is covered in unslightly exploded buzzard bits and broken bolts.

That's why you'll eventually love the possessed craftdwarves.  Another lignite mug for the flame lures!

Planepacked wasn't special because it had images of itself - artifacts have recursive pictures all the time.

Planepacked was special because it had over 400 engravings on it, 73 of which were of itself.

P.S. If you don't get this note, let me know and I'll write you another.
It's amazing how dwarves can make a stack of bones completely waterproof and magmaproof.
It's amazing how they can make an entire floodgate out of the bones of 2 cats.

It also consumed somewhere around 700 pieces of limestone, or something like that, and took the better part of two years to make.

A value of 18000☼ isn't anything special either (it's rather low, I got bauxite beds of five times that value; not speaking of platinum or even cotton candy stuff).

Yeah, this is nothing like Planepacked, or valuable, or interesting. There, I have sneered at you, and I will now move on.

Nice one, not sure when I'll be feeling like killing a baby but these things are good to know.
This is why we can't have nice things... someone will just wind up filling it with corpses.

Twas the first artifact of that fortress, and I couldn't find the artifact thread.

Is it possible to make weapon artifacts from lignite? or some other material that burns forever?

I imagine a burning sword would be a pretty potent weapon. Even if you -may- have to replace it's owner every once in a while.
