Easy Decoration
« on: February 19, 2011, 10:13:57 pm »

I propose an interface to ease the strain of decorating rooms...

I'm dealing with over 100 dwarves...each of them has a 3x3 room. I want each to have the following: 1 coffer, 1 cabinet, 1 bed, 1 table, 1 chair and 1 Weapon/armor rack. That's a basic room, and they only get more extravagant from there.

The interface would require a slight re-work of the current workshop interface.

When you decide to build a table, choose the material also. Now you have 1 table out of X material. now choose how many you want, moving the counter to say, 30. 30 tables out of X material. that way you can specifically create said amounts of whatever item's you choose

Now, another menu, much like the uniform menu now or even a modified version of the Hospital menu where you can designate what number/type of items you would like in said room.

Your dwarves now run around, gathering the designated tables/chairs/beds etc, placing them (evenly perhaps so it's automated) around any room you designate as a bedroom.  This could be done with a grand dining hall, temple, tomb area or even a barracks.

thoughts?

Combine that with another idea that was suggested, where "workshops" turn into rooms/zones which we furnish with various kinds of equipment and it could become very interesting.

You could have berries on the rocks and the dwarves would say it was "berry gneiss."
You should die horribly for this. And I mean that in the nicest possible way.

I think a better way would be to make the selection of materials to make your items require the manager. You'd have to use the manager screen and you'd even be able to add improvements. It could be made so that you make a production order with a list of things to be done. So you may order something like this:

x20

Granite cabinet
Decorate with bone
Decorate with bone
Decorate with gems (< 20 value)

You should be able to then make templates of items to place. So you could make bedroom templates, you'd first place the items, then use a rectangle selection to select the area to copy, then paste it into all the other rooms. That would be better than the hospital menu and it would give more power than it too.

This would be better for the workshop zones too.

Iv seen people who haven't had a redheaded person in their family for quite a while, and then out of nowhere two out of three of their children have red hair.
What color was the mailman's hair?

^-- this! That's basically what I'm talking about! I just didn't think it through that far I guess...but first we must ask ourselves, is this even feasible?

Dwarf Fortress: You have a team of hundreds working for four years to make a game where you save the world again. We have one guy for four years make a near-infinite world generator, write the physics, generate histories, form detailed descriptions of every human, elf, dwarf, and goblin generated, caverns, and huge randomly generated monsters made out of who knows what. You. guys. suck.

It'd be neat to be able to use a system like that (with the multiple consecutive orders) to make custom production orders that are then available to the Manager screen. As it is, entrusting and the like is kind of a crapshoot.

So far as the room/workshop suggestion, I've seen if here before and I still love the idea. Constant 3x3 workshops (or constant other shapes with mods) are all well and good, but what if I want an epic Craftdwarf shop taking dozens of tiles with benches everywhere for my my inventor dwarf. Wouldn't be hard to imagine if workshops acted more like hospitals
