Even they are watertight, no tank in the 1940s was airtight.  The superheated air wouldn't just make the metal box a bit toasty, it'd be like being in burning building, you'd die from asphyxiation.

Not to mention, y'know, Japanese tanks.  It'd probably set the fuel lines on fire or something.

They were absolute death traps. Riveted armor, single-operator turret, poor sloping, high profile... and at least in the type I got inside, no bulkhead between the engine and the crew compartment. That's right! Big, hot, loud diesel motor right behind you in a tin can on some tropical island. The crews probably suffered heat exhaustion just sitting at idle.

And that was when the generals didn't leave you on an island and force you to resort to cannibalism to survive.

Sauce on cannibalism? And they weren't so much 'left' as the US just skipped over a lot of islands the Japanese were defending.

Here ya go.

And thus began a long and annoying trend of Call of Duty games shoehorning a dramatic speech from a Russian guy into every game it'll fit in.

That was the best first mission I had ever played in an FPS.

No, I don't have a reference at the moment but I read Flyboys, and it talked about this. Also, it's not fiction, it's about a squad of American fighterpilots who get shot down and imprisoned.

If there's one thing the COD series is good at, its a cinematic moment. Unfortunately I hold the current games in nothing but contempt.
