Do artifacts wear down?
« on: March 23, 2011, 04:08:04 am »

Question in the subject. This just occurred to me because I just noticed that one of my dwarves was wearing worn out clothing, and my mayor just commandeered the clothier to make a shirt. I'd be a sad panda if something of such quality were lost to wear and tear.

Artifacts do not, no.  This can create various fun and Fun situations.  A wooden, lignite, or bituminous coal artifact, for instance, can be set on fire and become an !!Artifact!! but because it doesn't take damage, it will never be destroyed, and will stay on fire forever.  Many players enjoy making wooden or lignite artifacts, setting them on fire, and putting them outside.  Kobold thieves, raccoons, and macaque will kill themselves by grabbing it, catching themselves on fire, and burning to death.  You can also place a flaming artifact inside a metal bin and drop it in the ocean, which will destroy the entire ocean AND your FPS!

Artifact furniture is fun too.  Since it can never be destroyed, it's immune to building destroyers.  An artifact door works as well as a drawbridge, because FB and trolls will sit there smashing it for years.  Artifact statues, cabinets, weapon racks, etc can all be placed outside to stall, and building destroyers will stick to them like flypaper until they notice one of your dwarves nearby.

If I ever get such a statue, I definitely have to set up a zone of spikes around it and hook them to a repeater.

You could have berries on the rocks and the dwarves would say it was "berry gneiss."
You should die horribly for this. And I mean that in the nicest possible way.

Actually, any masterwork statue will work as well.  10 good spikes will shred any creature before it can smash the statue.  I had a titan spend like two seasons breaking a exceptional window.

Products created to fullfill a mandate are not artifacts are in any way special. Artifacts are only created by moods.

commandeered the clothier
Seems to imply a mood.

I always put an artifact statue outside the main gate, within range of the crossbows.  :D

Almost always. In my current fort I have an artifact steel statue of an elf striking down a dwarf. I'm not sure what to make of this.  :(

Means Cacame found a traitor and this dwarf is commemorating the event.
