Unable to abandon fortress
« on: March 16, 2007, 02:50:00 pm »

Having learned a lot from my most recent fort, I decided that I would abandon and start a new one that would hopefully not be designed so poorly. However, the game gets as far as "Sorting historical figures..." and then crashes. The save never goes anywhere and I can continue playing from where I last saved as if nothing had happened.

In what way does it crash?  Any popup windows?  Playing on from an old crashing save is going to get you a unit corruption message after some point, so it's important to use proper backups as described in release_changes.txt.  The saves don't survive crashes very well as there are always files being changed.

The only thing that pops up is Windows XP's little "do you want to report this to Microsoft?" window.

Try abandoning a few more times. Although it seems like it shouldn't work, I had a fort once that I wanted to abandon that would crash when I tried to. After 3 or 4 unsuccessful attempts that resulted in the game crashing, it managed to abandon successfully.

I guess a hist fig or site got corrupted somehow, but it's not really clear how or when.  I'll have to wait on this one.
