Build a pen / pasture
Assign animals
Attempt to butcher assigned animal
lulz as one dwarf tries to bring said animal back for slaughter while second dwarf constantly steals it and tries to return it to pasture. Looks like they're dancing.

10: Make a cage or Restraint
20: Put a cow on the restraint.
30: Order an animal to be milked via the farmer's workshop.
40: Farmer goes to retrieve cow.
50: goto 20

The thread title made me think of deathyaks from dungeon crawl

They're nearly as bad as badgers. Build a couple of anti-buzzard SAM sites marksdwarf towers and your fortress will look like Baghdad in 2003 from all the aerial bolt spam. You waste a lot of ammo and everything is covered in unslightly exploded buzzard bits and broken bolts.

This problem has been around awhile if I recall. Just have to put your butchers/farmers workshop close to the animal pasture/restraint/cage.

Well, the problem is now halfway moot.  Put the butcher/farmer's IN the pasture, and there you are.
