Strange Mood
« on: February 14, 2011, 06:35:24 pm »

A fisherman in my fort went into a fey mood, and he asks for:

raw green glass
rock
body parts
tanned hides
rock blocks
rough gems (lasts for a while, I assume he wants 2 or 3)
rock bars
(he took a craftsdwarf's workshop)

Strange, it seems that I have all of these items. I always buy plenty of stuff from the caravan, so I never seem to have any shortage of what this particular dwarf asks for. A look at the stocks confirms my suspicion:

Chances are, I'm doing something really, really stupid or forgetting about a crucial step. The problem is, I don't know what it is at all, and if it arises again, I'll be doubly screwed over. Where did I go so wrong?

When a fey dwarf asks for "rock blocks", it actually means something else. Typically, they actually want METAL bars, though it may be dependent on their preferences if they have any. Fey dwarves can be a bit tricky to please.

Other possible issues: Is the dwarf assigned to a burrow which restricts him from accessing the neccessary goods? Is a path otherwise available?

A path is available to every item. Disabling all my burrows does me no good; he still won't take anything.

I included a picture of metal bars in the post; I have almost 100 metal bars of assorted type. I even have copper and tin, the two metal types that he seems to like the most. However, in the status page, it says he likes native copper, not regular copper. Surely this can make no difference?

Native copper means he likes nuggets, which wouldn't be a problem unless there was a native copper bar.

Is limestone the only stone you have? I'm assuming no.

Other than that, I haven't a clue. Try butchering something and see if that helps, maybe he wants a fresh stack of bones.

No, it's not the only rock type I have. He doesn't seem to have any preference for a specific type of rock anyway.

This is a stretch, but he likes moss agate, and it appears that I do not have any. Do dwarves get picky about this stuff?

Also, when he wouldn't budge, my first move was to butcher up two horses for body parts. Unfortunately, it didn't work.

Rock blocks= coal or charcoal, usually used in forging a object

He still won't move, for some reason.

Has he gathered anything already? Knowing that might help. Alternatively, if he likes shell, he might be seeking it specifically as the body part that he desires. You probably don't have shell, either, since the caravans never bring them and most forts never produce any.

Nope, he didn't take anything.

If he wanted a shell, the mood page on the wiki indicates that he should have specifically asked for "shells".

Regardless, I let him die in the end, as I couldn't figure out a way to give him what he wanted, and he wasn't a very important dwarf anyway. I don't have any use for crafters.

Still, I did back up the save just in case, so if something clicks, I can go test it out again. I really wonder what he wanted as his first item and why he wouldn't take what I already had...

1.Possibly some materials might be forbidden.
2.Check out the contents of the workshop with (t)
3. Do you have a tanner, to produce fresh hides
4. Make sure doors are unlocked
5. Make sure items are in burrows he can access.
I think you have a doomed fisherman, ready the sheriff!

1. In the pictures, some materials were forbidden but there was plenty of stuff that he could have used instead.

2. He didn't take anything.

3. I don't have a tanner, but I buy plenty of leather from the caravan whenever I can.

4. Went back to my save, unlocked all doors. No good.

5. Don't have any burrows.

The wiki is wrong, one of my dwarves recently wanted shell while asking for body parts. :)

Huh. That might have been the issue then. Unfortunately, I always take all my fisherdwarves out of fishing and force them to go in the military or pick crops or something, so I can't really check to see if that's what they wanted. It is true that I did not have any shells in my fort, though, and it seems to be the only possibility available. Maybe I'll carve out a giant underwater cistern and hook it up to a river or something.

Thanks for your help, everyone!

Sorry I didn't arrive in time, but "rock bars" accepts metal bars that aren't alloys. So billon, rose gold, black bronze, etc. are right out, but copper, gold, silver, etc. are fine. I noted that you had a bismuth bar, though, so the "body parts" for shells thing might have been the issue. Either that, or you had only the one bismuth bar, and he needed multiple units of "rock bars" -- if they need more than one of a thing, they have an annoying tendency to avoid gathering it until the number of units they need are available.

Iīd go with tonkafox...
try to butcher an animal,
sometimes they arenīt satisfied with the bones available
and need fresh bones
