Exploring the magma sea

I want to explore the magma sea in search of a certain metal. What's the best way to do this? Dig and randomly poke holes everywhere? I can't exactly send some animal down there.

Yes, I believe poking holes in the roof of the magma sea is the best way. Then either seal them off to stop the magma creatures, or make some magma furnaces/smelters/others.
