You can test it. Build the cage and open it via lever near your militia. If he's hostile, then he is a training target. If he is not hostile, then he can keep your tigerman company.

i think you should be able to check its hostility on [ u ]nit screen.

but then you could put the cage in a drowning chamber and make your try there.
make it in a manner so the troll need to walk some way to destroy the door/floodgate. a walk takes longer than the water could fill the chamber.

Or use channeling to strand him somewhere and have a drawbridge to let him out if you want.

Since always? You have to double check that each cage contains a tame version of whatever they're selling, or you'll end up getting... Trolled?

@Point: You could always roll back a save and put him in his own little room and call him steve. He might not be tame, but he sure is a fun sentient to have around.

honestly, i didnt even notice he was in the cage when i bought it.
i just knew i needed some cages and didnt feel like building them myself

imagine my surprise when i found a troll in there!
