Fight with the ground?
« on: February 13, 2011, 09:01:52 am »

I noticed one of my miners in a cage trap at the bottom of my main stair shaft, and when I let him out, he had multiple red wounds. When I read the fight report, there was no mention of an enemy, just the miner taking multiple solid hits. Does this mean there is a fight report for falling? (and I still don't know what made him fall)

I think dwarves can fall down stairs ?

They're nearly as bad as badgers. Build a couple of anti-buzzard SAM sites marksdwarf towers and your fortress will look like Baghdad in 2003 from all the aerial bolt spam. You waste a lot of ammo and everything is covered in unslightly exploded buzzard bits and broken bolts.

Was there any cave-in?  Cave in dust will throw a creature, causing injuries to them when they hit something solid, and will stun them, which allows them to be caught by cage traps.  This is how you can even get your own men into cages.

Yep, it doesn't happen very often(never?) in normal use, but if a creature dodges into or otherwise unexpectedly encounters a stairway they tend to fall down the stairs until they hit a hatch or the bottom of the stairs.

yeah build floor hatches every couple of levels if you have huge stairwells just in case. They stop falling when they hit the hatch.

The combat report should say what hit him, or if not, that he collided into something. Odds are he just fell down some stairs.
