So I got a tablet last christmas (+ other creative thingys)
« on: March 10, 2012, 09:16:06 am »

Basically, I've always loved drawing, and after looking at all those awesome speedpainting things on DA and youtube, I got a tablet for christmas.
I'm still new to the whole drawing on computer stuff, but I reckon I've done pretty well so far, as I didn't really get into it at the start, as I thought "wow they make it look so easy! I BET IT IS!"
But it WASN'T

So yeah, this is what I've done so far.
I'd love some advice, or just general critiquing :)

This is the first one I did in PS that I was really proud of, and I was surprised it turned out so well (IMO):

The res of it is really small, as well as the next one.

This next one was an experiment in larger resolutions, but I'm not too proud of the outcome. Lots of it (especially the building thingy to the right) look really messy.

More high-res-ness, but I cropped this one down tonnes (was NOT proud of the 3/4 of it).
Plus it looked really flat :\

And the latest one:

I personally feel like I've gotten better at drawing using the tablet, but the main problem I feel I'm facing is basically just starting up.
Once I get going, I can do half decent drawings, but otherwise they all look bad so I just stop. (Which is why I only ever end up doing one only every 2nd or 3rd week.)

Also a bit of stuff done in blender:

So yeah, that's all I have for now :)
Any critiquing would be absolutely awesome

I like the first piece, but it has a lot of side views despite the different heights. It gives the platforms the feel of being tilted.

The second one has the shapes of a ship, but it lacks proper shading and details. If I had to say what the focal point of the picture was it would be the tiny ship in the background because it is much more detailed than the object in front of it.

In general you have a good sense of lighting when it comes to the glow of the light source. Most of them have a dull glow to them which is good for night scenes, and sci-fi cityscapes.

I would ignore speedpaints for now. Most people who post videos online are either professional, or have been drawing for years. You'll never see a failed speedpaint because no one will post it. If you want to try a speedpaint rough out the idea on paper first if it isn't from another image.

I have to ask, what kind of tablet are you using? Is it a Bamboo, an Intuos, or something else entirely? If it's a Intuos or a Cintiq I have a few suggestions for PS settings.

I had a feeling about that, but I wasn't sure on how to make the grassy areas look :\

What would you do for the shading? I'm not actually sure where the light source is in this one, I was just adding highlights here and there.

I use a Bamboo Manga.

Very Mass Effect.
Haha, thanks, I think. Never played any of the series, but I've heard good things about it ^^

Actually all you need to do is pick a vocal point to fix the problem with side views. I hope you don't mind, but I did a quick edit of your picture to show what a focal point does to side views. The red dot is the focal point, and there should be faint red lines showing how it lines up with it. Generally you want everything to line up with the focal point in some way to make it look flat and not tilted. Keep the focal point a fair amount above all the surfaces or else it'll look odd.

If you ever lack a light source just add one and stick to it. Your image will be easier to follow if you do. Adding highlights is good if you know where there is lots of light since that is where highlights are naturally. If you're ever looking for something to detail, go for something near the light, because that is where the eyes are drawn to first when you look at a picture.

I can kind of see what you're getting at, but I can't sort understand as well. If that makes sense.
What did you mean by side views? As in the platforms being flat, or the actual cliffs looking kind of flat?

What I mean by side views is that it looks like it was suppose to be at the same height as a focal point (at the horizon line). This would mean that you had two horizon lines at different heights in your first image. This should be impossible since it is where all land fades to in the picture.

Here's an example of the horizon line. All surfaces change their angling based on what height that line.

There is nothing wrong with surfaces at the horizon line, but you should always keep in mind where it is to avoid making more horizon lines.
