Are you REALLY want to attack giant mole dog?
« on: November 08, 2007, 03:15:00 am »

While fighting some monster it may get uncouncious and something like less "hostile" so i got to force 'A'ttack then chose from the list of one item and finally confirm with enter. [Repeat 10 times.] If i don`t do that most times it recoveres in couple of turns and attacks me again.

Even if there are some option to remove this warning(i didnt find) it should not affect obviosly hostile creatures or something.

What weapon are you using?  What's your skill?  If you're using a sword or axe, you should be able to chop limbs, of which two or three losses are enough to put down most foes not bigger than a human, and if you're using a bludgeoning weapon and you're not sure you've mangled their limbs enough, you can always take a moment to drop a weapon/shield, grab their head, and gouge out an eye or two; two lost eyes are just about guaranteed to kill them eventually (and keep them down due to pain), although on the off chance that they get up again anyway, they should have a lot harder time hitting you.

It shouldn't be forcing you to do more than press 'A' to get to the attack, though, unless somehow it thinks the creature is now benign, which is ridiculous (not saying it's not happening, but it would be ridiculous for it to handle that way now).  By the way, the reason the "Are you sure you want to attack this creature" message pops is so that you don't accidentally stab a peasant or guard by bumping into them and get the whole town enraged at you.

ADOM allows you to bump into peasants, but prompts whether you want to attack (Y/N). Here, you have to Shift-A, then "a", then Enter, if you want to attack somebody, instead of just bump-Enter. Shift-A is still required for wrestling (which makes it a lot more frustrating), so it should stay for now, but alterations to the combat system are very much needed.

Thanks for comments. First of all i didn't try to attack peasant or somebody friendly. I played elven archer with wrestling. When I put bow in backpack i dont need to press `A` wrestling used automatically. So while choking that prone "naked mole dog" charachter stops at some turn and instead of strangling just walks on the tile with it releasing all grips. And from now on I have to press 'A' to attack this creature, as it were friendly and game asks me if i really want to.
Same happened before to my axeman but I didn`t really pay attention because it took 1-2 turns to finish enemy.

It seems to be weapon independant. But wrestling seems to have better chances for this to happen. I believe it`s some kind of near-death state which makes creatures unhostile.

edit/ I use the 27_169_33a version.

It happens to me all the time. Whenever a critter becomes injured enough to become non-threatening (passes out due to pain), it becomes unattackable in normal ways. It only happened to critters so far - various rats, troglodytes, other small stuff. I haven't seen a kobold or a goblin "pacify" itself.

This seems to be true also in dwarf mode, and therefore monsters don't get finished up by soldiers, your workers consider said monsters as harmless, and they pass right next to them at the moment the monsters recovers consciousness. The consequences are not pretty.

I played more and found some giant rats who attacks my compaions and yet attacking them has to be confirmed, even if they are fully healthy. It starts to be really annoying. =(
