How much of an effect does quality have?
« on: February 13, 2011, 03:02:22 pm »

I'm not expecting a straight answer but I've had this problem a lot - to choose between an -iron breastplate- and a +bronze breastplate+ or weapons of the like. So, I would appreciate enlightenment!

Material is a more important factor than quality. Although I do believe bronze is better for armor than iron, and better for blunt weapons. Don't hesitate to ditch your *bronze greatsword* for that -steel battle axe-

There's also no reason to think that this doesn't still hold true to DF 2010

Live long if you can, and prosper by any means necessary.  Any means, Urist.  So pull that lever, or by Armok, I'll lock you outside come next siege.
He who plays with dwarves must take care that he does not become a dwarf.  And when you stare into DwarfFort, Dwarffort stares back into you.

Bronze is slightly better for blunt weapons, iron slightly better for armor and edged weapons, but in most cases the difference is minor enough for quality to really be more important.

And really, while material is more important in fortress mode, where you get a lot of armored opponents, adventurers generally face opponents with really crappy or no armor, so as long as your weapons are metal the accuracy bonus from the weapon quality is a much greater factor.
