I'm not sure this is the same anymore.  I assumed that levers just worked one way only when recently building some so had the dwarfs testing them while I hooked up other stuff, and when I tried to reset them to open two things at once it would open one and close the other, I think it was with flood gates.  It really wasn't my focus at the time so I don't remember what the exact circumstances are other then it seemed reliably to close one and open the other.

have the magma drop in from a hole in the roof, covered by a retracting drawbridge. problem solved

I have an array of spikes constructed in different times. I linked some spikes when the other spikes were recracted. They know retract and extract at the same time.
I'm using .16.

Hmm that's interesting because thats basically what I did only with flood gates and they worked opposite, despite flipping the lever numerous times.  Or it may have been floor hatches.  Im in .18
