Distance overflow?
« on: November 08, 2007, 02:40:00 am »

I was digging a passage to get magma to my fort, so i didn't want dwarves deciding to hang out in it, and so i marked it as restricted. However, it had some minerals in it from when i dug it out. I went to build something, and at the top of the list was one of those minerals, with a distance of -1456, possibly more since it ran into the next number.

I think it was adding up a lot of restricted tiles, leading to a really big number which overflowed into a really small number.

I would recommend to (d)esignate (f)orbidden newly dug out areas (in fact all items there) and pretty much never use 'restricted' traffic designation. When those dwarves have no reason to go somewhere - they don't go. Alternatively - build 1 door and set it to be 'forbidden' if you absolutely need your dwarves to keep out of there.

I've had this same problem, although I had it happen with my primary stone resource, which was literally everywhere, I had stockpiles full of it and don't think I had any in any distant locations. Made life difficult, but hey, I wasn't overly attached to that particular fortress.

I realised it only now - can you still e(x)pand the list of availeable materials and pick those that are at positive distance? Could it help with this situation when your primary stone is at 'negative' distance? Do workshop assigned jobs involving stone go for the farthest stone ('negative' distance) or for the nearest? If they go for the farthest - can you make enough stone crafts/blocks that they eventually use all stone at 'negative' distance? If there are too many stones there - can you watch after your craftsdwarf/mason when he goes for the 'negative' stone and designate forbidden all stones in that area?
