Whats the best kind of Water reactor?
« on: February 09, 2011, 11:56:20 am »

The elongated dwarven water reactor: is this on the wiki cause i couldnt find it?

W= water, w=Water on the level below  , I or _ = wall   , {=axle ,  M= Gear assembly
S
s= Screw pump   ,
X
X
X =Water wheel

upper level:                 Lower Level:
______                       II WI
IWWWI                       II WI
IWI___I                      II WI
IWI X                         II WI
IWI XM                       II WI
IWI X{                        II WI
IWI X{                        II WI
IWI XM                       II WI
IWI X{                        II WI
IWI X{                        II WI
IWI XM                       II WI
IWI X{                        II WI
IS I X{                        II WI
Is { XM                       II WI
Iww X                       IWWWI

(sorry for the poor diagram, hope you can understand it, ill put a picture up if you cant.)

Ive got up to twelve water wheels in it as it can theoretically extend forever with only one pump and therefore minimal construction, can be built anywhere if filled with buckets. powered my whole pump stack from the magma sea with it.

Whats the best kind of dwarven water reactor?

P.S. If you don't get this note, let me know and I'll write you another.
It's amazing how dwarves can make a stack of bones completely waterproof and magmaproof.
It's amazing how they can make an entire floodgate out of the bones of 2 cats.

These are the only ones I know about, but the one I use (when I use it) is just a natural river flowing into into a channel that's pumped back into the river. If there isn't a natural river, I'll just drain ponds into an artificial river and get the flow running which is a bit harder than it sounds.

This one is the most reliable to use.

I have done a bit of testing and, while a bit laggy, the basic mini reactor is the best design.  You can expand on this by having water wheels on either side of the pump to get some more power per pump.  I have also experimented with 2 wheels on either side of the pump and that seems to work out OK as well, I have been meaning to plan and test some larger variations, but have not gotten around to doing so yet.

Get the image hosted on photobucket (or similar site), then use IMG tags. ({img}file address{/img}, with square brackets).

I could answer that, but I assume the question is rhetorical. :P

On the topic at hand... you said you actually got that design with 12 water wheels working? That's interesting... I was under the impression that there were 'teleporting pressure' issues with long water flows. You're sure you were getting power from all the wheels and not just, say, the first and last ones?

your right abit yeh, after 10 wheels there were sporadic water outages as the water lost its pressure at the top when it fell and there fore coulndt get back t the bottom fast enough to keep running but if i kept the water lvl at about 5/7 that didnt matter too much.

luckily i found a way round this, you can build a pump on the below the level below at the very top. this way you can get it limitless with only two pumps as longs as you keep the water level low enough that theres no teleportation (and therefore no flow).
doing it this way you can even build it into a square meaning not as much space is required.
