Cave-in immediately on embarking
« on: April 05, 2008, 11:43:00 pm »

I embarked to a region that had a chasm, and the first thing that happened when I unpaused was a cave-in at the chasm.

I have my worldgen parameters, but unfortunately not the actual location of the region. Still, regional prospector should be able to find you the region fairly easily; there's open-air magma, a brook, and the chasm, in that order left-to-right; I have conglomerate stone on the north side and basalt on the south side.

Created in DF v0.27.176.38b.

Also, here's a save right before said cave-in (i.e. before any actions were taken).

I got this a lot when I went to an area with open magma, somewhere on a lower z-level there's a collapse. I never really thought anything of it.

Aye -this has been happening sense the Z-axis was introduced, atleast with magma.

That's odd, as I've embarked on plenty of magma maps, but this is the first circular-chasm map I've used (and the second chasm map, ever) and the only cave-in on embarking I've seen. Ahh, well. So long as it's a known issue.

It has to do with a lake or a hill being placed in the same location as the magma or chasm.  As the magma/chasm are placed later they don't effect z-levels above them, thus causing colapses.

As your dwarves approached the location the rumbling of thier wagon loosened the rocks and finally caused a cave in for the unstable area.  This is very similar to noise causing avalanches.

This is the proof that when a volcano erupts and no one is within range to notice it didn't actually happen.  Instead it waited for someone to see it.
