Performance hit: water spilling into chasm
« on: August 23, 2006, 04:08:00 pm »

Just dug out a channel for my aqueduct, straight from the river. It ended up skirting the very edge of a crevasse, so when I hooked it up and water started running it just spilled right over the edge (apparently an exception to the "water stays in channels" rule, but it makes sense as the chasm is technically lower.) I thought it was pretty neat, but I've noticed significant slowdowns since that point--not horrible, but enough to be annoying. And that's just from 4 or 5 points of spillage. Not really a bug, but it seems it could be optimized a bit. Really kind of puts a damper on my plan to create a perma-flooded chasm crossing to discourage the ratmen, although I suppose that's not such a terrible thing.

It might be a different part of the channelling process -- I've had spillage many times and haven't noticed anything.  If these flows lag, the miasma should cause horrible slowdowns since they are made up of more flows.  Did anything change with available paths when the channel was flooded, for instance?

That could be a possibility; after reading everyone's horror stories about aqueduct death traps, I made sure the channel was bottlenecked at both sides to prevent dwarves from playing on the aqueduct. The lag seems to have died down somewhat now, too.

Can you eventually fill the fault of cool parts of the lava?

Fill which with what?  The chasm?  The river?  Experiments are always good, though most but not all of them may be a little disappointing.

And if they're too disappointing we can always suggest them here.  Because your bloats list isn't long enough already.
