This still doesn't help for finding waterfalls that are not at joint points. I tried very high numbers of river starting points, not very much erosion, high cliffs, etc., only to find one after literally hours of searching.
I think mid-river waterfalls only appear where the biome changes, but couldn't check that for the apparent lack of these waterfalls.

i think i encoutered on, though not intended, mid-river waterfall, as rivers enters hill and/or woodland from mountain.
but it was merely three z-levels high.
and not sure if it is common.

so when i want a waterfall, i just go for joining rivers.

Me, too, but the mid-river ones look better in my oppinion (they are often straight and look more like a common waterfall).
Mine was 5 or 6 z-levels, and had the cool (literally  ;) ) property that the lower plane was in a colder climate than the upper one. Every winter, the river below the fall freezes for nearly half a year. But the waterfall does not stop, putting water above the freshly cast ice, creating more ice, and so on. In the end, it flooded a good part of the lower plane and encased it in ice, only stopping when the upper level if the waterfall was met.

lucky you!

then one time i had three majors river joining together, which was totally rare.
so i embarked, right on one of them.
one was about 30 z-levels above the lowest, the other was about 10 z-levels above.
and over 60% tiles are river.
then it thawed and all my dwarves drowned.

Doesn't a magmafall create deadly magma vapors of some kind? If so isn't a magma fall a good defense system?
Never mind magma mist can only be created by caving in something into magma. Still makes for a good defense if combined with grades and hatches so you can easily flood the entrance with them.
