underground trees above ground - an expirement
« on: February 07, 2011, 09:23:48 am »

(EDIT: not above ground, but without breaching caverns. I mispoke in the title)

Alright, so this was more of an accident, but the results are awesome.

In a previous fort (combinering) I dug into all 3 caverns. Because of this and other things my fps was down to around 10, and I was afraid of what would happen if I had a siege - so i abandoned it. Several dwarf years later, I embark a few squares away from it. Much to my suprise, my underground farm is immediately populated by underground trees and plants. Having an internal source of wood is awesome.

I assume they are unlocked by biome? Otherwise, do we have any other explinations of this?

No! No! I will not massacre my children. Instead, I'll make them corpulent on crappy mass-produced quarry bush biscuits and questionably grown mushroom alcohol, and then send them into the military when they turn 12...

hmmm.. maybe it's because one of the squares you embarked on before was marked "cavern_breached=true" or something, and it worked for you.
or it's global.

its all about mud dude.
well, mud and time.
and rest.

my 2nd or 3rd fort ever, before i ever knew there were caverns to breach, i had just figured out how to drain a pond into an underground chamber i'd dug out.
I dug the chamber out WAY bigger than i needed for my farming operation and figured "screwit" and just left the mud there to- well- mud.
after about a few months i noticed tiny little mushrooms growing there and a few months after that, they had grown into a tower cap and a fungi-wood.
also, i found out, if dwarves step on them while they're still tiny, they die.
the shrooms, not the dwarves.

Life (in dwarf fortress) is a cocophany of flavours, each more succulent than the last - why not sample them all?!
