Goblin siegers unable to find fortress? [33g]
« on: February 01, 2008, 01:33:00 pm »

Perhaps it's a pathfinding issue, or perhaps it's something else, but the latest goblin siege seems to be unable to find my fortress. I made my fort on a chuckn of land facing a lake, with land on the opposite side as well. The goblins spawned on the other end of the map, and well... they're just kind of idling over there. It's winter, so the lake's frozen, so I can't see why they wouldn't be able to cross it. The link in my sig has a better picture of the situation, if that helps.

How long have they been milling about for? I had to wait a good 5 minutes RL time before they came after me on my last siege.

(PS Sorry for any spelling errors, my space bar is broken =P)

They've been chilling on the other side of the frozen lake for about a month now, game-time. You'd think they'd get cold.

I actually have two sieges of goblins milling around in full view of my fort (second siege happened while the first was still going on). They've moved from their starting locations about ten squares *away* from my fort and haven't done anything but sit there and frighten mountain gnomes.

Snatchers don't seem to have a problem finding my fort.
...Though I did recently change the front entrance, and I haven't noticed any snatchers since....

I wonder if you change your front entrance if I breaks the pathing of the siegers somehow....

I've found that forbidden doors, raised drawbridges and other unpassable terrain break the siegers' pathfinding.  Lowering my drawbridge and permitting the entrance hatch caused the goblins to swarm inside again, until they hit the first (forbidden) door behind the hatch, where they stopped again.

I personally find this really sad, since it takes all the difficulty out of a siege :/

My goblins have a perfectly clear path all the way to the front door. I'm not sure what the problem is, unless they know, psychically, that there are 25 spear traps waiting for them at the front door.

I think I'm going to move some catapults over there and make some goblin puree.

Hi!

My experience with previous versions of the game was that siegers always know the status of your doors and will only march if they can actually reach any meaningful location inside your fortress.

If you have locked your front door, the siegers will stand still. Unlock them and they will march. Lock them again, they will stop.

Personally, I agree that it is not really satisfying. After all, just think of dozens of goblins getting slaughtered by the weapon traps in my entrance corridor, and the single survivor who climbed over all the corpses then realizing that the front door is firmly locked.

I wonder what "meaningful locations" goblins mysteriously home in on. Perhaps with some experimenting we can make a small fake outpost full of workshops and strashy stockpiles. We could fill up the workshops with suspended orders for work, and put nearly worthless forbidden trade goods on no-bin stockpiles.

This fake outpost should be laden with traps, and entirely disconnected from the rest of the fortress. Perhaps the goblins will go for it if we lock up the main doors.
