Sorry I don't have more detail for you but this could be a symptom of something else. I was walking through town in adventure mode and then suddenly got spammed with messages like this:

The pike has slammed into an obstacle!
The carp has slammed into an obstacle!
The pike has slammed into an obstacle!
The carp has slammed into an obstacle!
The longnose gar has slammed into an obstacle!
The carp has slammed into an obstacle!
The pike has slammed into an obstacle!
The carp has slammed into an obstacle!
The carp has slammed into an obstacle!
The pike has slammed into an obstacle!
The carp has slammed into an obstacle!

I walked around and checked the lakes in town and I couldn't find the one with these particular fish in it. This went on for about 6 whole announcement screens before it suddenly stopped and hasn't started again since.

The only thing I can think of that could have caused this is that particular town had a river running through it on one edge. But the messages stopped before I could get there.

Sounds like a river or cave river with a waterfall.  Fish swim over the edge, fall down, and slam against the bottom of the falls.

6 whole pages of announcements though. Thats either multiple waterfalls or a lot of fish.
