Paralysed miners
« on: January 31, 2008, 07:42:00 am »

From time to time my miners just freese. It can happen, when they are walking to the tile they want to mine, or when they are half mined it. They would just stand on one spot, their job listed as "dig", the square, they are supposed to dig is flashing... but it never gets mined out. If they somehow cancel their job (got to eat/sleep, designation cancelled, or they removed from job) They would return to normal. Until this happens again. I've noticed this behavior about five times in my current fortress, which is seven years old, so it's not frequent.

I have a save, if needed, which has a miner in this state.

Okay, I've received it and I'll throw it on the stack.  Or maybe it's more like a queue.

Do you go through the bug reports roughly in order from northwest to southeast, with occasional aberrations?

I think he does it by picking the closest one to his desk, then the closest one to that one when he's done, ad nausium.  Unless he takes a break for food or water, then he'll start with the NW most one and repeat as before.

I usually start with the saves I think are the most straightforward first, but I try to get through them all in a few days.  That might not be possible this time, since the pile has grown to 21 saves.

Yeah, it has grown since I didn't test them while doing all this new world gen stuff.  I imagine I'll be stuck on them for several days now.

The miner had forgotten the goal somehow, right at the end of the job.  I've now corrected this behavior whenever it notices it, but the root cause is only partially clear to me.  I'll handle that part later.
