Problems with barrels
« on: August 22, 2006, 10:07:00 pm »

I had a carpenter going all-out pumping out barrels so as to get my ale production going, and every time one was made a dwarf would grab it, dump it in the food stockpile and stick a couple of plump helmets in it.  After about 10 barrels I got sick of it and deselected the rest of the food stockpile, so now they are happily using the multitude of barrels they already moved.

Is there a way to keep dwarves from commandeering barrels they do not actually need?  Am I just missing something?

You can try arranging it so that all food-related buildings are farther from the furniture pile than from the food storage. And maybe even go as far as having the furniture pile directly after the still so you actually have to go through the still to get there. Sadly, there is no sure way to do it, I always just end up with monstrous amounts of barrels (and no drink). Let's hope we either get kegs, or some options to manage barrel consumption soon.

The fact that barrels can only hold 10 plants or 10 food in general adds to this problem significantly. I vote for more than 50 units of storage space in barrels. Interestingly my seed barrels weigh over 2000 weight units due to the fact that there are almost as many bags as seeds in them  ;)

What are the weight units anyway? I'd like to know so I can get some sense of scale around my fortress.

The weight units are...  random and inconsistent.

it wouldn't be so much of a problem if they would consolidate barrels every once in a while, but as it is you end up with tons of barrels with 1 or 2 units of food in each.
