Fast Repeater for Upright Spikes?
« on: January 31, 2011, 02:51:30 am »

Does anyone have a good reliable design for a fast repeater to be connected to sets of upright spikes? I have plenty of power available, if the repeater design requires it.

How fast can upright spikes cycle?

Also... I've got a pretty good spike... worth 2.7 million Dwarf-Bucks. Hopefully that will really hurt anyone who gets poked with it.

Cat/goblin repeater is the best bet.

The game doesn't appear to favor insta-spike designs, and I haven't bothered to look into any.  I generally just attach to a lever and set it for repeat use.  I assume that this is the fastest that it can go, since the lever should be near-instant use, and any delay is caused by the spikes themselves.  Either way, it works fast enough for danger rooms and torture chambers prisons.

Yah... the reason I ask: I've got nearly a dozen Forgotten Beasts stacked up in a holding pattern in my caverns, and several of them have syndromes (beware its deadly blood!) so I'd rather not fight them. I suppose I could just pump the caverns full of Magma and then pump them out again... but that seems a bit extreme*. I'd prefer to spike them to death from a distance while they're chewing on Kittens or something.

Maybe I'll just use the isolation-tank technique...

Drop socks, this will effectively disarm the beasts as they attempt to beat the kittens to death with socks.  Proceed to use them as archery targets.  You could always use a set of good marksmen, right?

Setting "Pull Lever" to repeat has worked fine for my danger rooms, but it's not continuous and will often have a little bit of delay-time from issuing it to spikes coming out of the floor.

It is my understanding that fluid/mechanical repeaters can't have a period any shorter than 100 steps.

Toughen Dwarves by dropping stuff on them.  (Nothing too heavy though, and make sure to wear armor.)

Try building a row of cave-in-traps.  Those work great--build as many kill rooms as you have beasts, plus or minus one--I build square rooms 3x3, line the edge of each room with armor stands, put a chain and an animal at the entrance to the cavern and hollow out an identical chamber beneath and above.  Set up all above chambers with supports wired to individual levers, ready to cave-in.  All below chambers are totally sealed-off and function only to create suction. FB slow done to deal with puppy, slow down longer to deal with the armor stands giving you plenty of time to droll a single tile near it, if the blow doesn't kill it, the suction will trap it right below the next cave-in you send.

And what about 2 repeaters? Combined, it gives a mean period of 50 steps.

...

What about 20 repeaters? If you don't mind linking every single upright spike with 20 components...

Unless the period you refer to is in fact the upright spike minimal delay.

Upright spikes take 40 steps to respond to signals.

P.S. If you don't get this note, let me know and I'll write you another.
It's amazing how dwarves can make a stack of bones completely waterproof and magmaproof.
It's amazing how they can make an entire floodgate out of the bones of 2 cats.
