They are fine right now, dont fix what's not broken.

Sieges are fine, but ambushes should come earlier

I'm still trying to find the balance between industry/building/fighting/etc. that gives me the proper level of challenge for the game to be fun.  If I play with no holds barred, it doesn't take long for my fortress to be a powerhouse that nothing can break.  I tried a couple mega building projects, but that's not for me.  It's cool once the project is done, but gah, boring.

I have to keep setting new rules to limit myself.  No traps.  No danger room.  Etc...

You know sometimes self-imposing rules are better then rules set in stones because then the play can really play in whatever way they want against a set challenge. My mod is a rather military-centric mod so I've also nerfed traps and removed danger rooms but I wonder if the player need to be told to do this and that or it's better for them to impose things upon themselves.

Anyway, voting should be automatically close itself soon, I thank all the people who have voted, the statistic was unexpected and the feedback were awesome. Basing on the result of the poll, I've pushed sieges earlier but leaving ambushes the same as it is. I play with FD so it'd take sometimes to evaluate that change, tho. Again thank you all, that were very helpful.

I play low population forts, but I love seiges so I'd like to see it be set-able. Like an init setting.

It's actually in the raw folder under entity_default, because each civilization will have a different limit for when they siege.  You can ctrl-f the folder and search for PROGRESS_TRIGGER to see the values.  These values are a little abstract, since goblins have a default trigger to start sieging at "[PROGRESS_TRIGGER_POP_SIEGE:2]" but these correspond to larger numbers.  You can find these exact numbers on the wiki article for "entity token" but "2" corresponds to "50".  So if you want it lower, you can set it to "1" which is "20" actual population.  ie, change that from 2 to 1, and you'll get sieges at 20 pop instead of 50.

At this point we're getting into modding talk, but the point is, if you ask on the forums "I wanna get sieges earlier" then someone will show you how to achieve this via very simple text editor like notepad.  It's not quite as simple as an init.txt, but it's still extremely simple as far as game modding goes.

sieges should come better equipped. if they could wipe out an entire dwarven civilization then they should have at least found some steel.

yes.
perhaps they should come partially with weapons that they got from other destroyed towns/forts. this could help factor in their "delayed" nature.
EDIT: Oh, and they should steal stuff that's randomly lying about and use it against you.

I really like this idea. If a siege ran into some kobolds who just visited your forges...
