I'm rather fond of my pit design in my latest fort-- a 6 level drop into a 10xIronSpear spiked chamber with the entire shaft having engraved walls and floors and gem windows around the bottom chamber and staircases. And for anything that survives the initial fall and impaling, I've got platinum statues of dwarfs to remind them just why they're bleeding out at the bottom of a pit.

I keep meaning to make a sarlacc pit. An inverted pyramid with spiraling walkways leading out covered in weak traps. The path into the fortress would lead through it, but once the goblins got into it they would keep getting knocked to lower levels. Eventually their nerve would break, and they would try to retreat, but they would face the same problem escaping as they did getting into the fortress.

In the unmodded game, only Dogs, Grizzly Bears, and Elephants can be trained into war animals.

... plus the big cats: Leopard, Jaguar, Tiger and Giant Leopard, Giant Jaguar and Giant Tiger. All without a DM.

There's actually a few more that I forget, but the one that I always remember is War Dragons.

War Elephants are awesome, and contrary to rumor will not accidentally trample friendly units.
im playing an unmodded game right now and i just bought a giant jaguar or puma or something from the elves, trained it as a war beast.

The problem with the exotic beasts in vanilla is, that you can't tame them yourself (minor annoyance as elves bring a few every odd year), and they don't seem to breed either if bought tame.

After the introduction of clay, finally it's possible to build fort defense resembling Qin Shi Huang's mausoleum with all traps and the mighty terracotta army.

This will be my first fort in the new version.

Those are all [PET_EXOTIC] creatures.  You need a Dungeon Master to tame them.  I suppose if you get them from the elves or something already tame you train them without a DM.
