ice - ruins farms
« on: February 01, 2011, 01:45:27 pm »

I was made a nice walled-in farm area, flooded it, and all was right with teh world. Winter hits ice is everywhere. Well, that is annoying, but what is more annoying is that the ice will melt and reflood everything, year after year. Bah, have to mine it out.

No problem again, right? then it collapses! How does one layer of ice collapse when mined? I don't really know honestly. But now my beautiful farm is pitted half a z-layer in wherever it collapsed, and I can no longer mine it. Shame.

anyways, just wanted to vent, and possibly look for solutions. I suppose I could dig the farm down a whole layer, but that just doesn't seem right.

On a brighter side, I find that the dead saplings (the ones frozen in blocks of ice) can be easily trampled by tightly controlling a meeting area. All is well in the world again.

No! No! I will not massacre my children. Instead, I'll make them corpulent on crappy mass-produced quarry bush biscuits and questionably grown mushroom alcohol, and then send them into the military when they turn 12...

Wait.

If it's outside, you don't have to muddy it up.

If it's inside, then it can't freeze.

What have you done?

Giant badgers are cruel saddistic balls of fur and hate. Did anyone know they could paint a wall with a single dwarven baby?.... You know what, I made the Giant badgers sound like sane DF players.

It must be both, inside and outside. DF is cool like that.

^this^

Also, it was probably the floor on the z-level above that collapsed.

Outside, but rocky. I flooded it to wet rocks that were otherwise unplantable - makes for a much cleaner planting area.

That, and it was fun to build and flood things.

Ice walls also create floor on the Z-level above. Those don't get mined out and will collapse. It cost me 3 miners before I learned this. If you are removing outside ice, it is better to designate ramps instead.
