My Dwarfs are literally mining themselves to death =(
« on: January 27, 2011, 07:39:42 pm »

They have booze... They have a brook... but they wont stop mining to go drink. Now they are all starting to die and I'm not sure why they don't go drink. The path is clear. I have a water source zone setup on the brook and plenty of booze. Could it be to far away? They are mining a huge rooms for storage/magma forges 94 z-levels down.

I've set up a meeting spot next the to booze and turned off their mining job but they are still not moving back to the surface. It really looks like they are all going to die. I've just lost 7 out of 17 dwarf and the rest of them are kinda standing around blinking with a down since i stopped them mining.

Any advice for the reclaim?

Check their paths. I have lost miners like this before because there was no way for them to leave.

As for reclaim, just do whatever.

All is not lost!!! I have a child dwarf that survived!!!! He's very unhappy about the loss of his mother and farther but he's up near the food and water. Is there anything I can do to keep him from killing himself before the next group of migrants come in?

So my last surviving dwarf is 11 years old. What age do the turn into adults?

Disable the mining labor and undesignate everything (for mining).

Children turn into adults at 12 years.

Dwarves will not mine until they starve or die of thirst.  You almost certainly screwed up the path somewhere, ending up with ramps or stairs arranged in a non-functional way, so that your miners couldn't get back to where the food and booze was.

What version are you playing? In some earlier versions dwarves would work until they were practically dying of thirst before putting whatever they were doing on hold to get a drink. And if they were working somewhere far enough from the booze stockpiles they sometimes died on the way there.

it was on the new version. The only thing I can think could have caused it was I built a floor tile over the surface exit and had them set to mine out another exit. Once I noticed they were going to keep mining the stuff at the very bottom of my fort I removed the tile but they never came back up =( my leader was down there too. There is alot of important stuff you can't do without a leader.

lets see which comes first.  Migrants to save the fort, or an ambush to slaughter the children.

While adding magma to anything will make it dwarfy, adding the word "magma" to your post does not necessarily make it funny.

It was Migrants! Now I one again have a large population that's throwing tantrums and killing one another. =)

I'm starting to think it might be a good idea to get a clean slate ever 100 or so dwarfs. I had an ambush and the goblins killed one dwarf... Then everyone started throwing tantrums and I've lost 3 more dwarfs to the riots =( but at least its keeping the doctors and bone crafters busy.

This can happen when you use only ramps to go between z-levels. Dwarves can mine themselves into situations they can't get out of.
