Half Frozen Brook
« on: May 18, 2011, 03:15:33 pm »

I just had a very weird event happen - half of my brook froze in winter, as well as the opposite end, but the middle section stayed thawed and continues to flow as normal.   :o

I was just curious as to whether this has happened to anybody else and if its a glitch that I should report.  I think it may just be two seperate biomes, one slightly colder than the other, but it's weird either way.

*Edit, mid winter came and the whole thing is frozen now, guess everything is fine, it was just weird to see.

If the map outlet is flowing, but the input freezes then the river either dries up or has very low flow rate. I had a map like this, so i dammed up the map edge, and made it a reservoir.

Not a glitch, a feature, proably due to biomes like you said. If the output point hadn't froze, your river would have dropped to very low level due to flowing away, but no water flowing in. My map had a permanently frozen input and unfrozen output, so i never got a "thaw" of the full river.

I have a river where a small portion freezes in early winter, before anything else.   Once winter comes in full force, everything freezes.  The bit that freezes first is about 5 by 6 tiles and irregularly shaped, near one edge of the map.  If it's a biome thing, a narrow tongue of colder biome would have to snake in from one side of the map.  Does this happen?

Hasn't happened to me, but sounds cool :) I'm guessing biome related, perhaps an average temperature should be taken so weird things like this don't happen?

Yeah, biome boundaries are fractal, so if you embark right on the edge, you can get "extra" biomes popping up for a few squares I think.

I can confirm this is biom/altitude related as I've experienced it quite often.

I had something similar happen to a major river with a waterfall flowing into it. The downstream end of the river froze up in winter (as did my PC for 10 minutes) leaving one half of it still flowing. The waterfall caused the remaining water level to rise suddenly and flood my fort.

Much fun was had, I can assure you.

I read that seasonal flooding actually did happen in the old version?

And yeah, this partial freezing happens a lot on colder embarks with multiple biomes and it looks rather odd.

Oh, yes, in the 2D version.  At the time it was a challenge to deal with and rather frustrating, between dwarves and pets being swept downstream and mud reaching unexpectedly far thanks to an idiot standing in a doorway, but now it's rather a fond memory.  I always liked watching the flood progress down the river and it was always a moment of "oh geez, what'll happen THIS time."

Do you know why that feature was removed? I'd kind of like to experience it for myself in the current version because it sounds like some good Fun potential. ;)

I'd imagine it was a combination of factors, but the folks with some coding knowledge or those who read the devlogs in more detail might be able to shed more light on it.  The 2D version was more basic in that it was pretty much the same layout and features every time (wall to the east, then cave river, chasm, magma, HFS), although the external environment could vary.

I have a site with a waterfall.  Apparently the fall itself is very close to the edge of the zones, because the water fall itself will thaw before the frozen mist area does... which leaves me with a giant 8 level pool walled in with ice, which will FPS kill when it thaws.
