Stockpile issues
« on: January 28, 2011, 05:04:01 am »

Several of my stockpiles seem to have accumulated problems as I've been playing.  I have a customized finished goods stockpile right by my depot, which up until recently was properly getting all of the crafts from my workshops.  Then, some time ago (I'm not exactly sure when; I didn't notice for a while), the dwarves stopped bringing goods to it.  There's plenty of space, and there are enough goods in the craftdwarf's shop to make it cluttered, but they won't move a single thing.  The same thing is happening with a farmer's workshop and thread, and was happening to my smelters, though that one seemed to resolve itself for no apparent reason.

I suspect that it has to do with their being confined to a barrow by an alert, though I'm not exactly sure how.  I only *think* that this all started while they were all indoors.  The stockpiles in question are well within the barrow, though, and the problem has continued after the alert was let up.

Is this a bug, or is something else going on here that I don't know about?

Are the workshops in the "Safety Burrow" as well?

Also, you said you made this a customized stockpile.  What did you change?  Messing with some attributes can cause a stockpile to accept no goods at all.  That would probably cause it to get emptied though...  What kinds of goods are you making that are sitting around untransported?  Are you sure that they are allowed in the stockpile?

Sorry if some of these are "r u a moran?" questions, but we have to cover all the bases here.

If your entire workforce is busy (0 idles, or no idle haulers) then it could be that they have higher priority jobs they're attending to.  fill pond orders and parties override everything too.  Highlight your workshops and check to see if any of the items have been tasked.  If so then they're on the task list and should be completed at some point but if you're got too many other things happening (hauling refuse seems to take priority a lot) they might not have enough paws for the work.

No, not a problem.  I'd rather not go through everything only to find they were behind a locked door or something, too (which it isn't).

First, a fairly large portion of the workforce was entirely idle, and most of those had all hauling labors enabled.  The items at the shops themselves do not have the "tasked" tag attached to them.

The stockpile itself has everything but clothes, armor, backpacks, quivers, splints, and crutches enabled.  Those have their own stockpile, which has its own private but different issues.  No changes were made to materials or quality.

The items themselves largely fall along the lines of "microcline bracelet" and "turtle shell figurine of dwarves," so they really should be moved.  What's more, up until now, they were moved into the stockpile, but now all that's there is a legendary artifact (a palm earring).  Note, it's empty because I just traded basically everything that was in it.

An interesting point in that was that when I was designating things to be moved to the depot, the items in the workshop appeared, and the ones that I designated to be transported to the depot were quite promptly, thanks to the fair number of idle dwarves.

The workshops are within the safety burrow, as well.

Feel free to ask any of the things that I could have done that were just incredibly dense.  I'd be perfectly happy to find that this was my own error... :P

The problem is probably the "safety burrow." The stockpile is trying to have your dwarves take items outside the burrow to it first, but since there's no dwarves who can go outside the burrow to get those items, nobody does those jobs. Since those jobs remain undone, the stockpile doesn't generate any tasks to move items inside the burrow to it. If you had more job cancellations shown, you'd probably get spammed with announcements that "Urist McHauler cancels store item in stockpile: forbidden area."

Basically, the thing to check at this point is "are there any items outside the burrow that could go in the stockpile?" If there are, either cancel the alert to allow the dwarves outside the burrow or forbid those items. There's some wonky ways that stockpiles and burrows interact; this is one of them.

That did it, NecroRebel.  I basically just waited a long time for them to gather up the stuff outside, and they started transporting things like normal.  There were leftovers from about eight (failed) ambushing goblin raids; I think that was what was doing it.

Thanks for the help!
