WHY???
« on: January 27, 2011, 08:19:04 pm »

So I survived my first goblin wave by capturing them in cage traps.  Seven or eight of them.  Thinking I could trade them, I moved them to the Depot when the elves came, and was unpleasantly surprised when this released the goblins into my fort.  They killed 13 dwarfs and 6 dogs before running into my weapon traps.  WHY?

I looked at the wiki and saw this was an alternate way of opening cages...Why?

You said bring the cage, and they brought the cage.  The pissed off green dude inside the cage is another thing altogether.
In all seriousness though, that is just how dwarves do things.  Live and learn, and all that.

I hadn't stripped them.  This was a live and learn moment for sure!  Thanks!

I made this mistake with a hydra.  It could have gone badly except that my axe-wielding militia captain managed to lop its head off 5 tiles from my butcher shop and it bled to death.  I then had 400-stack of hydra meat and a lifetime supply of tallow.  Hydraburger, anyone?

There's also a famous comic from "three panel soul" about this exact thing featuring a caged bronze colossus.  Link is somewhere.

that would be a different hydra experience.
For some reason Tamed animals will stay in the cage. And if it is just hauled to a stockpile it is fine.
Moving things to the depot is a little odd in general. It is a task that as far as I know can't be forbidden, even if they have Hauling turned off. And if you forbid the liquid in a barrel, the barrel gets moved, and the liquid gets dumped. Only way to remove non-booze liquids from barrels (now that dumping them is no longer in the game) and it only works on being moved to a depot.

Toady typically doesn't do things by half measures.  As evidenced by turning "make hauling work better" into "implement mine carts with physics".
There are many issues with this statement.

On a semi-related issue, I captured a couple of groundhogs. What is a good way to kill them for food? I did manage to release them but they then dashed into my corridors and spent ages running around until dwarves managed to catch up with them and 'pickaxe' them.

I did try assigning them to a pit but that didn't work, possibly due to a mistake on my part.

I would pit them. And escort them with my military. And the pit should be about 10z levels deep. You will have a lot of body parts then but it is fun.

this shouldn't have happened, but bringing cages with things in them to depot is bugged.

Yeah!  I mean Hydras can regenerate, right?  The first hydra I ever fought I had pinned down with 20 war-dogs until I was able to forge an axe and draft a militia, and just about every part of its body was Red by the time my axedwarf got around to (partially)decapitating it.  It bled out shortly thereafter.  I think that's the problem.  Too many neck arteries.
