Mechanics never finish linking levers
« on: August 22, 2006, 09:32:00 am »

I've been linking up a bunch of levers, and I have three mechanics devoted to it. Two are novice, one is skilled, but none of them ever finish. They have been linking up the same two levers for a year now. They have no other jobs and I always see them in there working on them. They don't seem to have any trouble building mechanisms or setting up traps, just linking levers.

I just watched my mason who part-times as a mechanic (novice) go in there and finish one first try. I started linking about 6 levers at the same time, and all of the others have been done for quite a while. I am guessing my mason finished the other ones and just hadn't had a chance to take a shot at these two with three "real" mechanics full-timing them.

edit: Dunno if it's relevant, but my error log is 86 lines of "BUILDPATH SAME SQUARE VIOLATION".

The same square violation is a known issue and might be tangentially related.  However, if you get a chance to check, I think you can look at the "duration" of the job by viewing the job in the [j] screen.  There might be some more useful information there.  You can at least see if the timer is going down.

It doesn't show a duration anywhere that I can see.

Ah that's right, that's not in anymore.  I'm not sure why they wouldn't be finishing the job.  The dwarves often get distracted by stupid things, but it seems like the other dwarf was able to finish them.  How fast is your mason?  Agile and so on?  They might finish the jobs faster for this reason.

The mason is Very Strong, and just recently became Agile, but he finished the two levers I mentioned before he became Agile. One of my mechanics is Very Tough, but none of them are anything else. I have a backup of an earlier save where they're still fiddling with the two levers if you want it.

I can take a look at it.

I'm getting a similar problem, where the mechanic starts linking up the floodgate, but takes ages, finishes, move onto the switch but leaves for food/drink before he finishes. When he comes back he starts again on the floodgate, despite the mechanism already being installed.

Though a restart seems to have corrected the problem...

I've had the same problem over several different forts and versions, and two different worlds. I always assumed the problem was that they were just too far from a food source.

I'm seeing it too.  Might start up a mason or some other agile dwarf on Mechanics see if I can get those levers finished off.
(One PITA problem is that the mechanic was working on a floodgate THAT WAS FINISHED AND WORKING for two levers (two different uses) and I told the one lever to flood the farm.
Long story short, the mechanic was dragged up-channel-flow into the river where he promptly drowned.
(How is is that water rushing AWAY from the river drags dwarves and cats TOWARDS the river?)

Did it drag them or were they swimming around like idiots because they were drowning?  The flows should push things the correct direction if they are pushing at all, but only at the wave front.  The rest is dumb pathfindless fidgeting.
