Stockpile info overload. Ish.
« on: January 29, 2008, 08:55:00 am »

So, on the stocks menu, I have some 35,000 stones about - which in and by itself is a problem - but whenever I try to scroll over to it/look at my lovely stones, the game.. well.  It semi-freezes with a 50% chance of crashing (1/2 times).  I guess it's a simple issue enough, and maybe not even a bug, but can something be done to simplify the info on stones?

For the record, my record keeper is set to the second highest accuracy level.

As a workaround, use the page up/down keys instead of single-movement keys.  It'll skip past the stones.

It's no fix for the absurd numbers you can get on it, but it's better than nothing.

Now you know why I set my crafters to work turning them into useless craftgoods and trading them.  In my one fortress I crafted so much I actually RAN OUT of stone.  I hadn't been doing excessive amounts of digging, but a couple of crafters could keep up with a normal fort.

I mainly did it to keep down item numbers, as I'm running on a laptop.

Appreciate the tip, and I was actually already doing that, so it's not really so much that it's crippling me, as much as knowing that if I ever click the wrong button while checking to see what my status on bars is, I'm boned.  :p

Does it crash when the stones are listed in detail or when they are compacted?

Also, a catapult set to "Fire at Will" is a good way to get rid of stone (unless your name is Will).

The slowdown is a problem, not a bug as much as inefficient code or design.  It should not crash there, though.

If you are overclocking or have your memory set to high settings, you may want to set your BIOS back to normal.  I had frequent blue screens until I dropped my RAM timings a bit (I wasn't overclocking though).  I'd run memtest lots, but there was nothing wrong with my RAM, just the computer stopped being overclockable.
