The corpses of dead goblins are used to smooth the stone, and the bones of long-dead elves to engrave the stone.

Sure, that means they could use their hair... but what of clean-shaven female engravers?  :o
Their engravings only reach hip height.
Why did I expect that kind of answer when I asked this? more importantly, why did I even ask?

I don't mean to alarm you, but it appears that your Dwarves are all in fact elephants.

Every dwarf is born with a tiny tool kit in their beard.

Actully, i'm going with this.

-At the hospital...-
UristmcDocter: Yes, Mrs. Urist, you've given birth the a healthy baby boy.
Mrs. Urist: May I see my baby? :D
UristMcDocter: Why, of corse!
Mr. Urist: Now, let's just see whats in this beard here...
Mrs. Urist: Aww! How cute! It's a stonecrafter!

-this played out better in my head...-
