Problem with Freezing Ocean?
« on: January 19, 2011, 07:59:05 pm »

I'm playing on an ocean biome map, and I've just hit winter for the first time.

So the ocean froze.

But now, just about the end of winter, the whole game is crashing, it's happened twice now.

Is the ocean unfreezing causing so much loading of fluid flow data that it's crashing my game?

Probably, in any biome where there is freezing, it "pauses" the game for a while (freezes the game basically), in your case the data is probably too much for your computer to handle.

Twenty seconds after the collapse, 14 dwarves hit the ground simultaneously.
EDIT: make that 15. Not sure what took that last one so long.

Is it crashing your game or just taking its time computing the sudden movement of 7/7 water in the entire ocean? I've waited 10-30 minutes for things to move along, depending on the number of ice tiles unfreezing.

I believe I'm not crazy if someone else does it too, right?

How much memory do you have?

There are other ocean biomes if you can't play freezing. They aren't as epic as Urist Mcawesomenator luring goblin ambushes into the middle of the ocean right before it thaws, but they aren't bad. I would turn aquifers off though, getting past them is too time consuming if you don't have ice or a lot of natural walls.

If it's getting really bad and you don't care if the ocean unfreezes, you could just turn off TEMP in the .init files.

The Biome is so cold that it freezes your computer.

Foolprooof way to penetrate aquifers of unlimited depth.  (Make sure to import at least 10 stones for mechanisms)
Toughen Dwarves by dropping stuff on them.  (Nothing too heavy though, and make sure to wear armor.)
