Training a bear
« on: January 17, 2011, 11:07:18 am »

I got a quick question. At the last elven caravan i decided to snag a Grizzly bear for my fort with the idea of training it to maul future attackers.

So i got a kennel and a animal trainer all set up.

But what option do i take? Taming a large animal doesn't give me anything.

And when i to Train a war dog/animal it says there is no animal available.

Help greatly appreciated :)

If you bought the bear from the elves, it should already be tame.  In that case, you can already release it from its cage and chain it up somewhere.

If you want to train it into a War Grizzly Bear, you need to release it from its cage.  Animals need to not be in cages or on chains to be trained.

If it isn't already tame, you need to tame it first.  This can and should be done without releasing it from its cage.

Ah that's what i was doing wrong, stupid me.

Thanks.

Also is it smart to use them as Hunting animals? Are they better/Worse than dogs or is there no difference?

Hunting animals are 2x as fast, and war is 2x damage AFAIK.

No i mean species wise.

Are hunting dogs worse/better than lets say a Hunting Grizzly bear.

Or is it purely for humerous cosmetics?

Grizzlys are bigger and weigh more so I think they make better war animals than dogs do, but the dogs probably make better hunting animals if you're going for speed.  Not entirely sure about that though, never really did any experiments with it.

I'm not sure you even CAN train a bear as a hunting animal. I seem to recall only certain animals being able to take that particular training.

But only grizzlies! I have still have a black bear and I'm sad that all I can do is have him chained in the entrance as spy snatcher.

Well my War Grizzly is having a lot of fun in front of my door.

I think together with two war dogs he murdered more raccoons then i can remember.

And a snatcher was also a nice little snack for him.

My only problems with war bears is that they tend to leave a LOT of hauling jobs in their wake.

I like my enemies to stay in one piece, if possible.

Well, another question I may add here:is it possible to train wolfs into war wolfs? I have 2 tame bought from elves, bought everytime I let them run around free and start a job in the kennel to train a war animal it always cancels the job?

Nope, without modding wolves can't be trained. You can however chain them up somewhere and they'll be not unlike war dogs. Look at; http://df.magmawiki.com/index.php/DF2010:Kennel#Trainable_animals
