What the heck is wrong with silk, eh?

My clothing maker mooded, claimed his workshop, and then just sat there.  He had silk cloth right next to him.  :l  And gems.  he wanted gems too.
Wtf much?  Or can they only use plant-based cloth?

Only fey dwarves tell you which cloth they want, and none will accept the other type.

Fey: "I must have <silk/plant> cloth!"
Secretive: pictures of stacked cloth.
Possessed: cloth...thread...

Yeah, they usually want a specific type, either silk of plant, so it's good to keep a few bolts of either on hand in case.
